![]() ![]() Now, lets address some of the benefits to sketchbooking that I have been referencing. Make it part of your daily routine and I promise you will use it everyday. Therefore, how can I justify making time to learn a completely new skill, that frankly I will never use? That is also easy. All of us are busy with work, family, children, hobbies, exercise, church, and the list goes on. Where am I going with all of this? To keep it simple, sketching and drawing is very easy, if you are willing to make it part of your daily life. I bring Leonardo da Vinci up for another reason as well, he was one of the first people known to use a sketchbook to observe Nature and human actions to better his understanding of them, he could often be found out in the streets recording what he saw. That is an astonishing amount of work and dedication, that surely elevated whatever natural talents he had, to mastery. Da Vinci supposedly produced some 20,000-28,000 pages of notes and drawings during his lifetime. Walter Isaacson does a wonderful job of detailing such accounts, in his book "Leonardo da Vinci", following the artist from a young age and the remainder of his life. Leonardo da Vinci, in my opinion, was likely one of these rare specimens. Well, you end up with someone that comes around only a few times in history. That amount of time may seem daunting, but remember, we are talking about the benefits of keeping a sketchbook, not becoming a world renowned artist.Īs a quick aside, some of you may be wondering what happens if you have 2 or 3 of these natural talents and over 10,000 hours of practice. ![]() Gladwell, explains that mastery or absolute proficiency in a subject matter or skill, requires 10,000 + hours practice. You may be familiar with Malcom Gladwells, 'Outliers", are aware of the concept of 10,000 hours. Sometimes, there are those that possess all of these, most of us are not that lucky.įor us mere mortals, who do not have these innate abilities, it takes practice. Perhaps, their level of curiosity, creativity, and imagination are without bounds. Maybe they have a unique and natural 'eye', the ability to see Nature around them through a lens or filter, few others can. All of which are very useful to the artist. The naturally talented artist could have great genetics, leading to incredible eye-hand coordination, steadiness, pressure control, and dexterity. This natural talent can present itself in many forms. Sure, there are many artists that have natural talent. It is a skill that requires practice, development, and refinement. Saying that drawing or sketching is easy, surely seems like a loaded or complicated statement. Putting my pencil down, smiling, and looking up at them, I say its easy. ![]() Someone inadvertently approaches me, admires my work, and says something like "I wish I could do that, but I cant draw at all. Wondering what this thought is? Let me give an example first of what happens to me all the time in public while sketching. There are unimaginable benefits and reasons why you should start doing this 'write' away, if you aren't already doing it now.īefore you stop reading and give up without trying, let me address the one nagging thought I know is on everyone's mind. ![]() I surely have noticed these individuals, likely because I am one. It is so uncommon in fact, that people noticing them probably wonder what on earth are they doing? "Look, that person over there has paper, pens, and pencils. Have you ever seen someone at the library, park, or airport sketching feverishly in a notebook? This seems so odd in todays society of cell-phones, tablets, laptops, smart-watches, and endless other digital web-connected devices. ![]()
